What is red face test?

The red face test is a diagnostic test used to determine the level of alcohol intake in a person. The test involves observing the face of a person after consuming alcohol. If the face turns red, and particularly if it remains red for some time, it is usually an indication that the individual has consumed a high volume of alcohol. The scientific explanation for this reaction is that people who carry a genetic variation in the ALDH2 gene (which provides instructions for making the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase 2) are more susceptible to flushing after drinking alcohol. The test can be useful in identifying problematic or heavy drinking behaviors and can help healthcare professionals recommend appropriate interventions. However, it should not be used as the only diagnostic tool for alcoholism, and other factors, such as family history of alcoholism, patterns of drinking, and consequences of alcohol use, should be considered.
